Carousels are also great for displaying image galleries, whether you’re a photographer, artist, or just want to share some visuals. With a gallery carousel, you can present multiple images without overwhelming the page, and allow visitors to scroll at their own pace.

Here’s how to add an image carousel in Squarespace:

  • Click Add Section.

  • Choose any of the options with an “i” icon in the upper right hand corner.

  • Click Edit Gallery and upload your images.

  • Click Edit Section.

  • Under Gallery Type, choose one of the slideshow options.

Customizing your photo slideshows

There are three types of photo slideshows in Squarespace — a Reel slideshow, a Full slideshow, and a Simple slideshow. Let’s go over the different customization options you have for each.

Slideshow: Reel

There are quite a few modifications you can make to the Reel slideshow. For example, you can:

  • Change where the controls(the clickable arrows) are placed

  • Change the width & height of the slideshow

  • Set images to be cropped

  • Add captions

  • Add and style a divider at the bottom of the section

Slideshow: Full

You can also change up the Full slideshow in multiple ways. For example, you can:

  • Change the width & height of the slideshow

  • Change the controls to arrows or bullets or hide them altogether

  • Set the slideshow to autoplay

  • Change the animation (how the image comes into the screen)

  • Add and style a divider at the bottom of the section

Slideshow: Simple

  • Add clickable thumbnails

  • Set the slideshow to autoplay

  • Add captions

  • Change the animation (how the image comes into the screen)

  • Add and style a divider at the bottom of the section

How to make your image carousel auto scroll

And since we mentioned the ability to make an image carousel auto scroll, here’s directions on how to do it.

  • In the gallery section, click Edit Section.

  • Select Gallery Type, Slideshow: Reel or Slideshow: Simple.

  • Under Options, select Autoplay.

  • Under Slide Duration you can drag the slider to choose how many seconds you want each slide to last for.

How to add image carousels to blogs in Squarespace

In Squarespace 7.1, adding a carousel to a blog page is going to look a bit different than the other methods above. Here’s what to do:

  • Click the blue + icon where you want to add the carousel.

  • Choose Gallery.

  • Under Content either upload your images under Upload Media or choose an existing collection under Use Existing Gallery.

  • Then click Design and choose Carousel or Slideshow (each has slightly different functionality, so test them both out).

  • Either check Automatically Transition Between Slides (and choose the amount of seconds between transitions) or Show Next and Previous Controls depending on how you want the slideshow to transition, automatically or manually.

Ideas on how to use image carousels

Every brand has a story. And while text is often a great way to tell it, sometimes a story is better told visually. So, here are some ideas for some interesting ways to use an image carousel to tell your story:

  • Showcase your portfolio — If you're a photographer, designer, or artist, you can use an image carousel to show off some of your best work to possible clients. You may also want to show off these pictures in a portfolio page or pages, but a simple slideshow can serve as a great sneak peak.

  • Highlight your products — If you run an e-commerce store, you might use the carousel to show off multiple products or different variations of a product, like colors or styles.

  • Showcase events or milestones — Maybe you hosted an event that you're proud of, and have plenty of pictures to show off. A carousel would be a great way to do it. It’s fun, interactive, and easy to digest.

  • Display before-and-after photos — If your business has visual transformations to show, like home improvement or personal services, you can use the carousel to show dramatic before-and-after photos. It’s a great way to show off your work in a "show, not tell" kind of way.

  • Show behind-the-scenes photos — People love getting a look behind the curtain. Use a carousel to share behind-the-scenes photos of your team, client interactions, or your process. It’s a great way to humanize your brand and make visitors feel a bit more connected.

  • Scrolling logos slider — If you’ve worked with notable clients or partnered with well-known brands, a scrolling logo carousel is a great way to display their logos. It gives your business extra credibility without taking up too much space on your site. If you want to create one for your website, use this guide from Will Myers.
