What are cookies?
Cookies are small files of information to identify your computer. They contain data about your interaction with the site, such as login information, preferences, and browsing history. Cookies help websites remember you, which can make your experience more personalized.
Cookies can enhance your experience, but they also raise privacy concerns, which is why websites often ask for your consent to use them.
How to add a cookie banner in Squarespace
Adding a cookie banner to your Squarespace site is a great way to keep your visitors informed about data collection. Plus, it helps you stay on top of privacy regulations. In just a few clicks, you can set up the banner and tweak it to match your site’s vibe. Here’s a simple guide to walk you through the process and customize it however you’d like!
Navigate to your site’s Settings.
In the Website tab, choose Cookies and Data Privacy.
Under Banner, turn the Cookie banner toggle on.
How to customize the cookie banner in Squarespace
Customizing your Squarespace cookie banner is a great way to make it match your site’s vibe and give visitors clear options for managing their cookies. You can easily update the text, buttons, colors, and layout to fit your business. Here’s a simple guide to walk you through tweaking the banner so it looks and feels just right for your site.
Update the cookie banner text and buttons
You can update the language of the cookie banner disclaimer and cookie banner buttons to whatever you’d like them to be. Here’s how:
Turn off or turn on the Manage cookies button and Decline all button depending on what options you want to give your visitors.
Use the automatically populated button and cookie policy disclaimer text or change it to the language you want your site to have.
Update the cookie banner saved preferences
You can also update how you allow your repeated visitors to update their cookie preferences (with a button in the footer). Here’s how:
Under Saved Preferences in Cookies and Data Privacy, change the preferences button layout to a Pill, Subfooter, or Hidden or change the preferences label text.
Customize the text size and banner position
Squarespace also gives you options to customize the cookie banner disclaimer text size and banner position by clicking Customize Banner Style under Preview in Cookies and Data Privacy.
Adjust the Disclaimer Text Size to your desired size.
Change the position of the cookie banner pop up. Squarespace gives you six options (top, top left, top right, bottom, bottom left, and bottom right).
Change the cookie button colors
To change the colors of different elements of the cookie banner (background, text, and button colors) change the color theme (Cookies and Data Privacy > Customize Banner Style > Color Theme). This will set these elements to the colors you have them set to in your color theme settings.
To change your color theme settings, click the Site Styles (paint brush icon at the upper right hand corner), click Colors, then click the pencil icon next to the color theme you want to change.
To change the accept button color, change the Primary Button Background color.
To change the decline cookies button color, change the Secondary Button Background color.
To change the manage cookies button color, change the Tertiary Button Background color.
To change the background color, change the Section Background color.
To change the disclaimer text color, change the Paragraph (Small) color.
Just remember that changes you make will affect any sections that use the same color theme!
Why should you add a cookie banner
Adding a cookie banner is a key step for staying compliant, building trust, and improving your visitors' experience. Here’s why a cookie banner is worth adding to your site:
Legal compliance
It’s important to make sure your use of cookies is in accordance with data privacy laws. The requirements in these laws vary, but some are fairly strict like the GDPR (in the EU) and CPRA (California). Most of these laws require you to inform users you use cookies, how and why you use them, and gather their consent. Skipping the cookie banner could lead to fines or legal issues, so make sure you stay informed with the laws and keep your business in line with these regulations to avoid potential problems down the road.
Improved user experience
Giving visitors the option to accept or decline cookies puts them in control of their data. People appreciate having that choice, and it leads to a better experience overall. When users know exactly how their data is being handled, they’re more likely to trust your site and engage with your content.
Building trust
A cookie banner might seem small, but it shows you respect your visitors’ privacy. When people see that you’re serious about protecting their data, it builds trust. This is especially true with people who are aware of data privacy laws (like other website owners). It can be a serious turnoff for them if they see that you are not taking these laws seriously.
